TRUMP TARIFFS: President Donald Trump will make his “Liberation Day” announcement focused on tariffs from the Rose Garden Wednesday afternoon.

Trump will head to the White House’s Rose Garden at 4 p.m. Wednesday, where he will be joined by members of his Cabinet to unveil his highly anticipated tariff plan that aims to unshackle the U.S. from its decades-long reliance on goods made overseas.

“On Wednesday, it will be Liberation Day in America, as President Trump has so proudly dubbed it,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told members of the media Monday.

Trump has for weeks promoted April 2 as America’s “Liberation Day,” and he will announce reciprocal tariffs on foreign nations that export goods to the U.S. Trump and his administration have remained relatively tight-lipped on details of the tariff plan, instead noting that upcoming tariffs will reportedly even the playing field for the U.S. on trade policy.

“I think it’s going to be something that’s going to bring a lot of wealth back to our country, tremendous wealth back to our country, actually,” Trump told the media Monday. “And other countries are understanding because they’ve been ripping us for 50 years, longer.”

The Trump administration has argued that placing tariffs on nations that produce goods overseas will encourage industries to establish manufacturing and production operations on U.S. soil to avoid the additional tax. The administration has said the tariffs will lead to an increase in jobs available to U.S. workers as overseas companies set up shop in the U.S.

The president said Sunday the tariff plan would affect “all countries” and has reiterated that his administration will be “nice” to foreign nations compared to how they have charged the U.S.

“We’re being nicer than they were,” he said while speaking to the media after signing an unrelated executive order Monday. “We have a lot of countries, friend and foe. I always say friend and foe, but the friend in many cases is worse than the foe. They took advantage of us, and we are going to be very nice by comparison to what they were.

“The numbers will be lower than what they’ve been charging us, and, in some cases, maybe substantially lower. But we sort of have a world obligation, perhaps,” he added. “But we’re going to be very nice, relatively speaking. We’re going to be very kind.”

Judge allows Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil’s deportation

A US judge has ruled the Trump administration can deport Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate detained last month over his role in pro-Palestinian protests.

Mr Khalil, a permanent legal US resident, has not been charged with a crime. In a letter written from the facility, he has said his “arrest was a direct consequence” of speaking out for Palestinian rights.

The government has cited a Cold War-era immigration law, declaring that his presence in the US was adverse to American foreign policy interests.

The immigration court’s ruling does not mean Mr Khalil would be immediately removed from the country. The judge gave his lawyers until 23 April to appeal against the order.

The activist has been held at a Louisiana detention centre since 8 March, when immigration officers told him he was being deported for taking part in protests against the war in Gaza.

The 30-year-old was a prominent voice at Columbia University’s protests against the war in Gaza last year.

The Trump administration has cited a 1952 law that empowers the government to order someone deported if their presence in the country could pose unfavourable consequences for American foreign policy.

The judge said the Trump administration was allowed to move forward with its effort to deport Mr Khalil because the argument that he poses “adverse foreign policy consequences” for the US is “facially reasonable”.

Mr Khalil, who was otherwise silent, addressed the court after the ruling.

“I would like to quote what you said last time that there’s nothing that’s more important to this court than due process rights and fundamental fairness,” Mr Khalil said in court.

“Clearly what we witnessed today, neither of these principles were present today or in this whole process,” he said. “This is exactly why the Trump administration has sent me to this court, 1,000 miles away from my family.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) described the decision as “pre-written”.

The rights group said the ruling came less than 48 hours after the US government “handed over the ‘evidence’ they have on Mr. Khalil – which included nothing more than a letter from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that made clear Mr Khalil had not committed a crime and was being targeted solely based on his speech”.

The government, particularly Rubio, has said its efforts to deport Mr Khalil were also to “protect Jewish students from harassment and violence in the United States” even if his activities were “otherwise lawful”. They have not

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised the judge’s ruling on Friday.

“It is a privilege to be granted a visa or green card to live and study in the United States of America,” she wrote on social media. “When you advocate for violence, glorify and support terrorists that relish the killing of Americans, and harass Jews, that privilege should be revoked, and you should not be in this country. Good riddance.”

Mr Khalil’s legal team has repeatedly said evidence of antisemitism has not been presented.

His lawyer, Marc Van Der Hout, condemned the decision and said his team was going to fight for Mr Khalil’s “right to speak out against what’s happening in the US”.

The legal team also said they expected further hearings in the case.

“Today was historic in its unfairness,” Johnny Sinodis, another member of Mr Khalil’s legal team, said during a news conference.

Mr Khalil has also filed a federal court lawsuit in New Jersey challenging his arrest as unconstitutional. His lawyers have said the outcome of that case could block his deportation if they win.

The Trump administration has separately alleged that the student committed immigration fraud by failing to disclose certain information on his green card application.

This includes working for the British embassy in Beirut and the United Nations agency for Palestinian migrants and refugees. But the government has not submitted any new evidence related to this.

In a statement, White House Assistant Press Secretary Taylor Rogers said the Trump administration is “committed to the enforcement of our immigration laws and will take swift action to remove aliens who pose serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States”.

Ukraine holds huge deposits of rare earth minerals and natural resources; including lithium, titanium, coal, gas, oil and uranium.

Many of the minerals, however, are in areas now controlled by Russian troops.

“I think it’s quite a mark of respect, the amount of people that are committed to being patient and queuing,” one volunteer queue steward told BuzzFeed News of the massive line. “Even if it rained, I think they’d still be here.”

Kate Fryer, a National Health Service worker who traveled from Kent, braved the queue for five hours on her own and with a bad hip.

The 44-year-old, who was supported with a walking stick, commended organizers for making the grueling process as accessible as possible for those with mobility issues.

“They’ve been so good. It’s so well organized,” she told BuzzFeed News.

When they reach the end of the line, mourners enter the solemn scene at Westminster Hall, where the Queen’s coffin is lying in state, surrounded by ceremonial guards with a glittering crown lying on top.

A livestream from the BBC shows those queuing silently stopping beside the coffin. Some bow, some cry, but all feel a sense of history that seems hard to describe for those in line.

Queen Elizabeth Death Certificate Lists Old Age As Cause

The death certificate for Queen Elizabeth II was officially published on Thursday, revealing that the 96-year-old monarch’s cause of death was simply listed as “old age.”

The National Records of Scotland published the extract of an entry in the Register of Deaths, which formally noted that the Queen died at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire on Sept. 8.

The official time of death was listed as 3:10 p.m. That is almost two hours before her children Princes Andrew and Edward, and grandson Prince William, arrived at the castle, and almost three and a half hours before her death was announced to the public.

Her other two children, King Charles III and Princess Anne, were already with the ailing monarch when she died, with Anne being listed as the signatory on the death certificate.

The Queen’s usual residence was listed as Windsor Castle, while her occupation was listed simply as “Her Majesty The Queen.”

The document also contains the names and royal positions of her late husband, Prince Philip, as well as her father and mother, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

The medical practitioner who signed the death certificate was Douglass Glass, who had served in the role of Apothecary to the Household at Balmoral since at least 2009.

According to the NHS Education for Scotland, a certifying doctor should not list “old age” as the sole cause of death on a medical certificate unless they have treated the deceased over a long period, have observed a gradual decline in the patient’s health, are not aware of any identifiable disease or injury that contributed to the death, and the patient was 80 or over.

Tottenham vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Preview, predictions and lineups

Tottenham Hotspur host Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday evening.

Spurs have been disastrous domestically but still have a shot at European redemption this season. Under-fire Ange Postecoglou and his band of underperforming stars would end Tottenham’s remarkable 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League, also securing Champions League qualification as a welcome byproduct.

Tottenham’s current form and recent knockout record suggests that European silverware remains unlikely but they boast arguably the most talented squad remaining in this year’s competition.

Last eight opponents Eintracht are not to be underestimated, however, with the German side having enjoyed a mightily impressive term under the exciting Dino Toppmoller. Die Adler are currently third in the Bundesliga and were 6-2 aggregate victors over Dutch giants Ajax in the last 16.

Frankfurt also boast one of Europe’s most in-form centre-forwards, with Hugo Ekitike – who has been linked with the Premier League ahead of the summer window – scoring 19 times in all competitions this term.

Tottenham have had rotten luck with injuries this season but Postecoglou’s fitness woes have eased up in recent weeks. Richarlison returned to the bench during the weekend victory over Southampton, meaning only Dejan Kulusevski, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin are sidelined for Thursday’s clash.

Despite Wilson Odobert starting and scoring twice in Tottenham’s last Europa League outing, Brennan Johnson’s weekend brace could see him retain a starting berth for Frankfurt’s visit. Lucas Bergvall, who was a goal chalked off for offside at the weekend, should partner Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield, while Djed Spence could continue ahead of Destiny Udogie.

The rest of the Spurs side more or less picks itself, with Postecoglou requiring mammoth performances from stars like Cristian Romero, James Maddison and Son Heung-min.

Elye Wahi was considered a significant doubt for the trip to north London but the forward, who has made just six appearances for Frankfurt since his winter switch, has been named in the travelling match squad. Timothy Chandler, another who was expected to miss out, also features.

However, Frankfurt remain without first-choice goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and Ansgar Knauff, Krisztian Lisztes, Eric Ebimbe and Igor Matanovic are all missing.

2014 World Cup final-winning goalscorer Mario Gotze, now 32, remains crucial to Toppmoller’s side and former Premier League representatives Rasmus Kristensen, Robin Koch, Mahmoud Dahoud and Michy Batshuayi have all made the trip back to England.

Frankfurt predicted lineup vs Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Kaua; Kristensen, Koch, Tuta, Brown; Skhiri, Larsson; Collins, Gotze, Bahoya; Ekitike.

You’re never entirely certain which iteration of Tottenham will turn up on the big stage, with Spurs having proven mightily unpredictable both domestically and in Europe this season. Postecoglou will rally the troops ahead of a gargantuan encounter and the weekend win over Southampton should boost morale slightly.

Their German counterparts are not in the best form having lost three of their last five league matches, but they have huge attacking potential and swatted the resurgent Ajax aside in the previous round. They will cause Tottenham’s porous rearguard issues.

People Across The Globe Marched In Solidarity With Demonstrators In Iran

Thousands of people across the globe on Saturday marched in solidarity with the anti-government demonstrations in Iran as violent police crackdowns have continued against people who speak out against Iran’s mandatory hijab laws.

In Berlin, police estimated that about 37,000 people had joined the German demonstration on Saturday afternoon. In Washington, DC, hundreds marched on the National Mall waving Iranian flags, chanting, “Be scared. Be scared. We are one in this.” Several universities in Tehran staged more demonstrations on Sunday.

The outcry was sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman who died on Sept. 16 while in custody of Iran’s morality police. She was arrested for wearing tight pants and “improperly” wearing her hijab. Her family later spoke out, saying they believed she was tortured and killed.

Protests spread in Iran, with many calling for a downfall of the conservative regime — and international voices joined in quickly to criticize Iran’s theocratic rule and brutal suppression of protesters. President Joe Biden condemned Iran’s actions earlier this month.

Global Leaders Rush to Woo Trump, Hoping to Sway Him on Tariffs

President Trump’s plan to impose sweeping tariffs on most of America’s trading partners has governments across the globe racing to schedule phone calls, send delegations to Washington and offer up proposals to lower their import taxes in order to escape the levies.

On Monday, European officials offered to drop tariffs to zero on cars and industrial goods imported from the United States, in return for the same treatment. Israel’s prime minister was expected to personally petition Mr. Trump on Monday in meetings at the White House. Vietnam’s top leader, in a phone call last week, offered to get rid of tariffs on American goods, while Indonesia prepared to send a high-level delegation to Washington, D.C., to “directly negotiate with the U.S. government.”

Even Lesotho, the tiny landlocked country in Southern Africa, was assembling a delegation to send to Washington to protest the tariffs on its exports to the United States, which include denim for Calvin Klein and Levi’s.

Mr. Trump and his advisers have given mixed signals on whether the United States is willing to negotiate. On Sunday, Mr. Trump said that the tariffs would remain in place until U.S. trade deficits disappeared, meaning the United States is no longer buying more from these countries than it sells to them. But the administration still appeared to be welcoming offers from foreign nations, which are desperate to try to forestall more levies that go into effect on Wednesday.

On Monday, as markets recoiled for a third day and Mr. Trump threatened even more punishing tariffs on China, the president said that “negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately.”

“Countries from all over the World are talking to us,” the president wrote on Truth Social on Monday morning. “Tough but fair parameters are being set. Spoke to the Japanese Prime Minister this morning. He is sending a top team to negotiate!”

The turmoil in the stock markets since the president announced tariffs last Wednesday has prompted speculation that the president might be willing to strike some deals to roll tariffs back. On NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Senator James Lankford, Republican of Oklahoma, predicted that tariffs would be “a short-term issue while the negotiations are actually happening.”

“I think once the president starts announcing some negotiations in some different countries we’ll start to see the market calm, and we’ll start to see the rates come down pretty quickly,” Mr. Lankford said.

But both Mr. Trump and many of his advisers have downplayed the prospect of any immediate changes. On Sunday night, Mr. Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he would not reverse tariffs on other nations unless the trade deficits that the United States runs with China, the European Union and other nations disappeared.

“Hundreds of billions of dollars a year we lose with China,” Mr. Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “And unless we solve that problem, I’m not going to make a deal.” He added that he was “willing to deal with China, but they have to solve their surplus.”

The tariffs that go into effect Wednesday range from 10 percent to 40 percent on nearly 60 countries. They are calculated based on the U.S. trade deficit with each country and will be added to a 10 percent global levy that went into effect on Saturday.

Some countries — like Europe and Canada — have threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods, while others have decided to hold off to avoid Mr. Trump’s ire. On Monday, Mr. Trump responded angrily to China’s decision to retaliate and said he would impose “additional tariffs on China of 50 percent, effective April 9.”

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, reiterated a threat of retaliatory tariffs Monday even as she proposed dropping some tariffs between the United States and Europe to zero. “We are also prepared to respond through countermeasures, and defend our interests,” she said.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s president, said in a video address on Sunday night that Taiwan had no plans to retaliate with tariffs. He added that investment commitments made by Taiwanese companies to the United States would not change as long as they remained in the national interest.

Across Asia — where Mr. Trump has targeted some of his harshest levies and where factories specialize in making electronics, auto parts and shoes for the United States — leaders have been offering to strike deals and working to set up meetings with Mr. Trump. The tariffs are a particular threat to multinational companies that have relocated factories from China to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in recent years, after Mr. Trump opened a trade war with China in his first presidency.

On Monday, the trade secretary of the Philippines said the country would reduce tariffs on goods coming from the United States and meet “soon” with the U.S. economic team. The leader of Cambodia — which faces the highest tariff rates of any Asian country, at 49 percent — sent a letter to Mr. Trump on Friday, saying it was reducing tariffs on 19 categories of American imports immediately. Thailand, which is facing tariffs of 36 percent on its exports, expressed its “readiness to engage in dialogue.”

In Vietnam, where many people had been expecting tariffs of around 10 percent, the announcement of 46 percent tariffs came as a blow. Vietnam’s deputy prime minister, Ho Duc Phoc, was scheduled to leave Sunday for a trip to the United States with a delegation that included executives with the country’s two main airlines, which have been promising to buy Boeing aircraft.

Vietnam’s trade ministry asked the Trump administration to suspend the 46 percent tariff, and requested a phone call with the U.S. trade representative, Jamieson Greer, “as soon as possible,” according to a statement on the government’s website.

In a call with Mr. Trump last week, Vietnam’s top leader, To Lam, promised to slash tariffs to zero on liquefied natural gas, cars and other U.S. goods coming into the country, and suggested his counterpart do the same, according to a statement from the Vietnamese government.

“Just had a very productive call with To Lam, who told me that Vietnam wants to cut their Tariffs down to ZERO if they are able to make an agreement with the U.S.,” Mr. Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday morning.

But speaking on CNBC Monday this morning, White House trade counselor Peter Navarro said Vietnam’s offer to lower tariffs would not be enough to convince Mr. Trump to back off given concerns about other barriers, beyond tariffs, that countries use to block American exports, like taxes or regulations.

“When they come to us and say, we’ll go to zero tariffs, that means nothing to us, because it’s the nontariff cheating that matters,” Mr. Navarro said.

Mr. Navarro also urged the European Union to drop barriers like its value-added taxes, which Trump officials claim discriminate against the United States. “You steal from the American people every which way is possible. So don’t just say we’re going to lower our tariffs,” he said.

But Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who along with Mr. Greer was put in charge of negotiations with Japan, sent a very different message in an interview late Monday, saying that Mr. Trump was ready to negotiate.

“President Trump, as you know, is better than anyone at giving himself maximum leverage,” he said, adding, “And at a point, President Trump will be ready to negotiate.”

In Japan, where stock markets fell by more than 7 percent Monday, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he would be willing to meet with Mr. Trump to discuss the levies and would stress to Mr. Trump that Japan “is not doing anything unfair.”

Japan’s trade minister, Yoji Muto, did not hide his disappointment over the tariffs. He told reporters that he had immediately held “an online meeting” with Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, to tell him the “unilateral tariff steps were extremely regrettable.”

“The Ishiba government would prefer to negotiate rather than escalate,” said Tobias Harris, founder of Japan Foresight, a firm that advises clients on Japanese politics. “It is struggling to determine with whom it can negotiate, if anyone.”

Mr. Muto had traveled to Washington last month as the tariffs loomed for urgent talks with Mr. Lutnick. Mr. Muto argued for Japan to be given an exemption based on the roughly $1 trillion that his nation has invested in the United States, including in huge automobile plants built by Toyota and other Japanese automakers.

South Korea’s trade minister, Cheong In-kyo, also planned to visit Washington this week to try to lower the blanket 25-percent tariff Mr. Trump imposed on goods from South Korea. Mr. Cheong is expected to meet with Trump administration officials, including Mr. Greer, to express concern about the new duties and seek ways to minimize their impact on South Korea’s export-driven economy.

European officials have also been flocking to Washington to try to negotiate. On Friday, the E.U. trade commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, met with his American counterparts via videoconference for what he described as a “frank,” two-hour meeting, and pledged that conversations would continue.

Mr. Sefcovic has traveled to Washington repeatedly in recent weeks, but progress so far has been halting. E.U. officials who met with Mr. Lutnick and Mr. Greer had found that they were not prepared to negotiate before the tariff announcement on April 2.

European leaders have expressed a willingness to lower tariffs in some sectors and have dangled other potential carrots, like buying more American liquid natural gas and ramping up military expenditures. But they are also preparing to retaliate, hoping that hitting back with the power of the European economy will drive the United States to the negotiating table.

E.U. officials have spent the last several weeks refining a list of counter-tariffs that they plan to put into place starting on April 15. They sent the refined list out to member state representatives on Monday, and a vote on the list is expected on Wednesday.

While that initial wave of retaliation is in response to only steel and aluminum tariffs, policymakers have indicated that more is coming if negotiation fails. Some national officials are even open to hitting America’s big technology companies with trade barriers, and E.U. policymakers have signaled that all options are on the table.

European nations export a lot of pharmaceutical products, cars and machinery to the United States, and companies across the continent are bracing for pain as the fresh U.S. tariffs kick in.

Asked on Monday afternoon if Europe’s offer of zero tariffs on American cars or industrial products was enough, Mr. Trump replied: “No, it’s not. The E.U. has been very tough over the years.”

Only a handful of countries — including Mexico, Canada and Russia — have escaped Mr. Trump’s new levies. In an interview Thursday, Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez Romano, the Mexican deputy secretary for international trade, said that Mexico had been working hard to establish a constructive and positive dialogue with the United States over the past five weeks, and that the decision to exclude Mexico and Canada from the tariffs was a signal of the value of the trade agreement between the countries.

Mr. Lutnick had been speaking with Marcelo Ebrard, the Mexican economy secretary, weekly by phone or in meetings at the commerce department in Washington, Mr. Gutiérrez said. Mexican officials assured the Americans that Mexican exports were different than those from Vietnam or China, because Mexican manufacturers use far more parts and raw materials from the United States in their factories.

Amadou Bagayoko, Half of Malian Duo Who Went Global, Dies at 70

Amadou Bagayoko, a Malian guitarist and composer who with his wife, the singer Mariam Doumbia, formed Amadou & Mariam, inventing a broadly accessible sound that made fans of people worldwide who otherwise knew little about music from Africa, died on Friday in Bamako, Mali’s capital. He was 70.

His death was announced by the Malian government, which did not provide a cause. He and Ms. Doumbia lived in Bamako.

In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Amadou & Mariam was regularly described as the new century’s most successful African musical act.

Mr. Bagayoko, who grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, called their sound “Afro-rock,” and the group regularly combined his winding guitar solos with, for example, the pounding of a West African djembe drum.

Yet the group’s music also consistently evolved. Their breakout hit, the 2005 album “Dimanche à Bamako,” had chatty spoken asides, sirens, the hubbub of crowds — city sounds turned into melodies. Their 2008 album “Welcome to Mali,” conversely, embraced an electronic style of funk, opening with a song, “Sabali,” featuring Damon Albarn of the arty hip-hop group Gorillaz.

What was consistent was a sweet, graceful sound that still had the power to build to crescendos, with Ms. Doumbia’s alto achieving clear, pleasant resonance over a rich orchestration.

Mr. Bagayako sang, too. The couple’s lyrics were mostly in French and the West African Bambara language. Politics inspired some of their songs, but they often identified local topics that could have more widespread appeal, as in their 2004 song “Sénégal Fast Food.”

Amadou & Mariam were often grouped into the much-derided genre known as “world music,” but whatever provincialism that term might seem guilty of, this was an era when many young Americans came to love African musicians, including the fellow Malians Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté, who died last year. Around the same time, American stars like Bonnie Raitt and Ry Cooder made pilgrimages to Bamako to jam with local artists.

“What they do hearkens back to classic rock and real musicianship,” Jake Shears, the lead singer of the American indie pop band Scissor Sisters, told The Times in 2012. “Now with all bands, when you’re playing live, everybody’s got backing tracks going on. Everyone’s working with a net. They are a proper old-school rock band.”

The origins of that training and skill lay in the couple’s background. Each of their lives had, to a large extent, depended on music. Mr. Bagayoko and Ms. Doumbia were born with sight, but both became blind as children because of poor medical treatment.

Amadou Bagayako was born on Oct. 24, 1954, in Bamako. His father, Ibrahima Bagayogo, was a bricklaying instructor, and his mother, Mariam Diarra, devoted herself to raising their 14 children.

Amadou was born milky eyed, with cataracts, but he went blind only gradually. A doctor later told his family that the boy’s real issue had actually been a trachoma infection addressed too late. It was also impossible in Mali then to get a cornea transplant, which could have saved Amadou’s vision.

“In those days,” Mr. Bagayako wrote in the couple’s joint memoir, “Away from the Light of Day” (2010), “being blind was the worst thing that could happen to you in Malian society. It was tantamount to being a beggar.”

From practically his infancy, Amadou got used to “drowning his sorrows in music,” he wrote. He became good enough at the flute and harmonica for his teacher to ask him to play the Malian national anthem after class every day.

An idea formed in his young mind. “Music,” he wrote, “would be my passage out of poverty.”

Around the age of 13, an uncle began teaching Amadou the guitar. He soon realized he could differentiate guitars by manufacturer based on sound.

Before long, Amadou was playing with Les Ambassadeurs du Motel, one of Mali’s best-known musical groups. He also began attending the Institute for the Young Blind, Mali’s first modern school for the blind. A teenage girl there was highly regarded for her singing: Mariam Doumbia. She had been blind since the age of 5 from untreated measles.

Mariam showed Amadou lyrics she had written about the harsh reality of being disabled in Mali. Amadou began setting her songs to music.

They played together for years just as friends and collaborators. In 1980, dancing at a party, Mr. Bagayako declared that his true feelings for her were romantic. Ms. Doumbia kissed him. “I felt the doors of paradise opening,” he wrote in their memoir.

Local news outlets covered the marriage of the two esteemed blind musicians. Concert promoters from nearby African nations began making them offers. They expanded their repertoire from their native Bambara to other languages like Tuareg and Senufo. Fans called them the Blind Couple From Mali.

By 1996, they were able to move to Paris and record an album there, now singing in French. That led to “Je Pense à Toi,” their first hit outside Africa.

The musical globe-trotter Manu Chao produced “Dimanche à Bamako” and helped write lyrics for some of its songs. The album sold more than 100,000 copies in France alone in just about a week and went on to become an international hit.

The couple gained prominent billing at American music festivals like Bonnaroo and All Points West, alongside bands popular in the mid-2000s like Radiohead, Kings of Leon and Animal Collective.

In 2009, they opened at several stadium shows for Coldplay. The same year, they performed at a concert in honor of President Barack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize, and they met Mr. Obama himself.

Their production wound down over the 2010s and 2020s, but they performed together as recently as last summer during the Paralympic Games in Paris. As of Sunday, their website still listed dates for a European tour in May and June.

Mr. Bagayako and Ms. Doumbia had three children, including a son, Sam, who is also a musician, as well as several grandchildren. Complete information about survivors was not immediately available.

One of the couple’s last international hits was “Bofou Safou,” released in 2017. It had a paradox that seemed appropriate for a couple who had so fully devoted their lives to music. The lyrics admonish young men to focus less on dancing and more on working — yet the cheerful, groovy beat challenges you not to dance.

Newcastle United are hunting a third-straight Premier League win on Monday night as they face a Leicester City side that has won just once in 2025.

It’s been a miserable return to the top flight for the Foxes, with their sole victory in the new year arriving against Tottenham Hotspur in February. They’ve lost eight on the bounce in all competitions and are already preparing for the second tier next season.

The hosts are 19th in the table with a meagre 17 points, 15 adrift of safety with eight games to play.

Unlike Leicester, Newcastle harbour hopes of a grand finale after they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy before the international break.
