Deserter reveals secrets of top-secret Russian nuclear base | BBC News

A former officer at a top-secret Russian nuclear weapons facility has revealed the secrets of life at the base after deserting from the country.

Anton, not his real name, said the nuclear weapons base he was serving at was put on full combat alert on the day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

He also rejected the view that Russia’s nuclear weapons mostly date from the Soviet era and might not work; saying they are fully operational and battle-ready.

The BBC is unable to independently verify all the events he described, although they do correspond with Russian statements at the time.

Real Madrid’s defence of their Champions League crown has been far from impressive but Los Blancos can all but secure their place in the knockout phase of the competition on Wednesday evening.

The European behemoths host strugglers RB Salzburg at the Santiago Bernabeu knowing that victory will likely ensure them a play-off berth come the end of the league phase, but the Spanish giants can ill-afford complacency midweek having already lost to Lille, AC Milan and Liverpool in the competition.

Carlo Ancelotti, who has recently been linked with a Madrid exit this summer, has a few defensive conundrums to figure out before Wednesday night, but has seen his side hit their stride in the final third since the turn of the year.

Here is how Madrid could line up for an important duel with Austrian side Salzburg.

GK: Thibaut Courtois – Madrid’s defensive issues mean that Courtois can expect to be worked on Wednesday, even by the misfiring Salzburg who visit the Spanish capital under new management.

RB: Federico Valverde – Dani Carvajal’s season-ending injury and Lucas Vazquez’s European suspension mean that Ancelotti will reshuffle his backline. Valverde, who has featured at right-back on occasion this term, is likely to step in for the absent Spaniards.

CB: Raul Asencio – Injuries at centre-back have caused Madrid issues this term but the silver lining has been young Asencio, who has largely impressed during his regular first-team forays.

CB: Antonio Rudiger – David Alaba’s much-anticipated return at the weekend bolsters Ancelotti’s options at the back and Rudiger will be keen to see the Austrian line up beside him sooner rather than later.

LB: Ferland Mendy – Fran Garcia has started the last two matches for Madrid but Mendy could be favoured midweek, with rest and rotation important for Los Blancos following a hectic start to the calendar year.

DM: Luka Modric – Suspended for the weekend win over Las Palmas, Modric will be utilised in the engine room on Wednesday following injuries to Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

DM: Dani Ceballos – Starts have not been commonplace for Ceballos this season but he has been named in the XI for the last two games. With Valverde shunted to right-back, he should make it a hat-trick against Salzburg.

RW: Rodrygo – The Brazilian impressed on Sunday afternoon, adding a fourth goal to the scoreline after half-time. He’s now netted three times in his last four appearances for Los Blancos and will fancy his chances of adding to his tally against the porous Salzburg.

AM: Jude Bellingham – Madrid endured a frustrating afternoon at the weekend regarding the Video Assistant Referee, who ruled out three strikes for the reigning Spanish champions. Bellingham is one of those who saw his effort chalked off.

LW: Vinicius Junior – Vinicius joined Modric in the stands on Sunday as he too sat out with suspension, but the indefatigable superstar will make his comeback midweek. He’s scored five in as many Champions League games this season.

ST: Kylian Mbappe – After a slow start to life in Spain, Mbappe has found his feet. Eight goals in his last ten has boosted confidence levels and the Frenchman will be keen to punish Salzburg on Thomas Letsch’s return.

Trump Orders U.S. Exit From the Paris Agreement on Climate

President Trump on Monday signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, the pact among almost all nations to fight climate change.

By withdrawing, the United States will join Iran, Libya and Yemen as the only four countries not party to the agreement, under which nations work together to keep global warming below levels that could lead to to environmental catastrophe.

The move, one of several energy-related announcements in the hours following his inauguration, is yet another about-face in United States participation in global climate negotiations. During his first term Mr. Trump withdrew from the Paris accord, but then President Biden quickly rejoined in 2020 after winning the White House.

Scientists, activists and Democratic officials assailed the move as one that would deepen the climate crisis and backfire on American workers. Coupled with Mr. Trump’s other energy measures on Monday, withdrawal from the pact signals his administration’s determination to double down on fossil-fuel extraction and production, and to move away from clean-energy technologies like electric vehicles and power-generating wind turbines.

“If they want to be tough on China, don’t punish U.S. automakers and hard-working Americans by handing our clean-car keys to the Chinese,” said Gina McCarthy, former White House climate adviser and former head of the Environmental Protection Administration. “The United States must continue to show leadership on the international stage if we want to have any say in how trillions of dollars in financial investments, policies and decisions are made.”

On Monday Mr. Trump also signed a letter to the United Nations, which administers the pact, notifying the world body of the withdrawal. The withdrawal will become official one year after the submission of the letter.

U.S. efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions were already stalling in 2024, and Mr. Trump’s entry into office makes it increasingly unlikely the United States will live up to its ambitious pledges to cut them even further. Emissions dropped just a fraction last year, 0.2 percent, compared with the year earlier, according to estimates published this month by the Rhodium Group, a research firm.

Despite continued rapid growth in solar and wind power that was spurred by the previous administration’s signature climate legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act, emissions levels stayed relatively flat last year because demand for electricity surged nationwide, which led to a spike in the amount of natural gas burned by power plants.

The fact that emissions didn’t decline much means the United States is even further off-track from hitting Mr. Biden’s goal, announced last month under the auspices of the Paris Agreement, of slashing greenhouse gases 61 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. Scientists say all major economies would have to cut their emissions deeply this decade to keep global warming at relatively low levels.

In a scenario where Mr. Trump rolled back most of Mr. Biden’s climate policies, U.S. emissions might fall only 24 to 40 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, the Rhodium Group found.

“President Trump is choosing to begin his term pandering to the fossil fuel industry and its allies,” the Union of Concerned Scientists said in a statement. “His disgraceful and destructive decision is an ominous harbinger of what people in the United States should expect from him and his anti-science cabinet.”

Since 2005, United States emissions have fallen roughly 20 percent, a significant drop at a time when the economy has also expanded. But to meet its climate goals, U.S. emissions would need to decline nearly 10 times as fast each year as they’ve fallen over the past decade.

The United States is also a major exporter of emissions. Because of policies promoted by both Republicans and Democrats, the United States is now producing more crude oil and natural gas than any nation in history. Mr. Trump has vowed to further ramp up production and exports.

While the United States may not be party to the Paris Agreement, it will still be part of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, which hosts annual climate negotiations known as COPs. This year’s COP will be held in Brazil in November and nations will be announcing new pledges for emissions reductions.

One recent study by Climate Action Tracker, a research group, found that, if every country followed through on the pledges they have formally submitted so far, global average temperatures would be on track to rise roughly 2.6 degrees Celsius, or 4.7 degrees Fahrenheit, above preindustrial levels by the end of the century, well above the 1.5 degrees Celsius the Paris Agreement originally set as a goal.

“Trump’s irresponsibility is no surprise,” said Christiana Figueres, a Costa Rican diplomat and an architect of the Paris Agreement in 2015. “In time, Trump will not be around but history will point to him and his fossil fuel friends with no pardon.”

Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has hailed wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant’s defensive technique after the conclusion of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Pant endured an inconsistent series with the bat, scoring only 255 runs at an average of 28.33.

The southpaw scored just one half-century in nine innings despite getting off to solid starts on several occasions. Yet, Pant showcased his versatility in the final Test at Sydney with a 98-ball 40 and a 33-ball 61 in the first and second innings, respectively, on an extremely challenging batting wicket.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin hailed Pant’s defensive skills and felt his first-inning 40 had unfairly flown under the radar amidst his second-inning onslaught.

“We must realise that Rishabh Pant rarely gets out playing a defence. He’s got one of the best defences in world cricket. Defence has become a challenging aspect, he has the best defence with a soft hand. I have bowled to him a lot in the nets, he’s not gotten out, he doesn’t get an edge, he doesn’t get LBW, he has the best defence. I have tried telling it to him. One opinion about Rishabh was that he plays a lot of shots, he has to fight it out in Test cricket,” he said.

Ashwin added:

“I have always grown up hearing that you have fight it out. In Sydney, he played two different knocks in one single game. He got hit everywhere and scored a 40, it will be the least spoken innings of Rishabh Pant. It is very unfair. In the second innings, he scored a swashbuckling fifty, earning him a lot of praise. Everyone forgot that first innings and praised him for the second knock.”

Ashwin has played with Pant in Team India for several years and recently retired midway through the Australian series.

Meanwhile, Pant boasts impressive Test numbers with almost 3,000 runs at an average of over 42 in 43 outings.

Ravichandran Ashwin believes Rishabh Pant is still to realize his full potential with the bat. He called on the wicketkeeper-batter to work on finding the ideal balance between defense and attack.

Despite his several heroic efforts in the past, Pant was heavily criticized for his untimely dismissals while playing rash shots during the Australian series.

“We have to tell him properly what he has to do if he has to bat solid or bat with intent. He hasn’t scored a lot of runs, but he didn’t play like someone without runs. He has a lot of time on his hands. Rishabh Pant is yet to realise his fullest potential,” said Ashwin.

He concluded:

“He has all the shots—reverse sweep, slog sweep, everything—but the problem is that all these shots are high-risk shots. With his defence, he will surely score runs every game if he faces 200 balls. The point is finding that middle game. If he combines all of it, he will score 100 runs every game. He has to find that middle game.”

Pant played a massive role in India’s back-to-back Test series wins in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21.

However, his sub-par showing in the recent series meant India suffered a 1-3 defeat to surrender the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia.

Dramatic day ushers in a fragile Israel-Hamas ceasefire, ending 15 months of war

After 15 months of war that began with a brutal attack on Israel by Hamas and ended with much of the Gaza Strip levelled by Israel, a ceasefire came into effect on Sunday that saw three women hostages released from Gaza and 90 Palestinians expected to be freed from Israeli jails in return.

For two tense hours on Sunday morning, the ceasefire looked as though it might falter from the very outset. Hamas failed to provide the names of the three hostages it planned to release, prompting Israel to postpone the ceasefire and continue its air strikes on Gaza.

In what should have been the first hours of peace, from 08:30 local time (06:30 GMT), at least 19 Palestinians were killed by the strikes and 36 more were wounded, the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency said. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they had struck “a number of terror targets”.

The three hostages’ names were eventually sent by Hamas to Israel, via an intermediary, and Israeli military action in Gaza ceased for the first time since a brief, week-long ceasefire and hostage exchange back in November 2023.

At 11:19, Majed al-Ansari, the spokesman for the foreign ministry of Qatar, which has helped broker the ceasefire deal, wrote on X that the final obstacles had been cleared “and thus the ceasefire has begun”.

Six hours later, three Israeli hostages – Romi Gonen, 24, Doron Steinbrecher, 31, and Emily Damari, 28, who is a dual British citizen – were handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross in Gaza and then to the Israeli military. TV coverage showed chaotic scenes in Gaza City’s Saraya Square as crowds massed around the vehicle carrying the hostages and Hamas fighters struggled to push the people back.

There was a brief glimpse of the three women as they were taken from the van, amid the surging crowds. From the handover point in Gaza they were driven by the IDF to the nearby Re’im military base in southern Israel to be met by their mothers.

Extensive planning by the IDF had gone into the delicate handover, with military medics and psychologists readied for the first stages of the process at a reception centre designed to ease the hostages’ transition.

From Re’im, they were transferred by helicopter to the Sheba Medical Centre near Tel Aviv to be reunited with their wider families and receive further medical attention. Two of the three reportedly suffered gunshot wounds in the attack on 7 October 2023, when Hamas killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostage.

The release was the first of several due to take place over the next six weeks – if the ceasefire holds – until a total of 33 hostages have been returned and about 1,900 Palestinians have been freed in exchange. Ninety-seven hostages are still in captivity, Israeli authorities said, though dozens of those are presumed dead.

In Gaza, where the health ministry says more than 46,900 people have been killed during Israel’s offensive and the majority of the strip’s pre-war population of 2.3 million has been displaced, many civilians yearning for home learned over the weekend that their long wait would continue.

The IDF, which should withdraw its troops from populated areas during the first phase of the deal, warned civilians on Sunday not to approach the buffer zone it had created along Gaza’s borders or the military zone in central Gaza, known as the Netzarim corridor, which cuts the north of the territory from the south.

It was expected to be a week before some displaced people in the south can cross the corridor and move back to their homes in the north.

For civilians who have spent 15 months in desperate conditions in tents and makeshift shelters in Gaza, suffering from malnutrition and disease, the relief of the long-awaited peace was tempered by the immense scale of the destruction and loss.

“By God, the feelings are mixed,” said Helen Jabri, 41, in a phone interview from a shelter in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

“Our hearts are aching for the people we have lost,” she said. “My brother and his entire family were lost. My father is a prisoner. We are very happy that the torrent of blood has stopped, but there is pain here in every house.”

Some began packing up and moving on foot Gaza on Sunday, particularly from the most southern areas including Rafah. But it will be a long time before any sense of home or normalcy can be returned to the vast numbers of displaced. The northern parts of the strip, including Gaza City, have been subjected in places to almost total destruction during the war.

The UN’s satellite agency estimates that 60% of structures across Gaza have been damaged or destroyed by Israeli strikes and demolitions, meaning many displaced will have to remain for now in shelters or continue sleeping rough, prolonging a massive humanitarian crisis.

“The vast majority of shelters are overcrowded and many are simply living out in the open or in makeshift structures,” said Juliette Touma, communications director for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unwra. “They lack basic needs like warm clothes. I would not call these living conditions, they are not conditions fit for human beings.”

Noura Zakout, a ministry of education employee from Gaza City, told the BBC from a shelter in Khan Younis on Sunday that she would return to the city at the first opportunity “no matter the destruction and ruin”.

“I just want to go to the city and smell its air,” she said. “We know we have no home to go back to, but at least now with this ceasefire we can take a breath. Like a diver who goes deep underwater, we have come up for a moment for air.”

In Israel, the finalising of the first part of the deal brought relief for three hostage families after 15 months of pain. In a statement, Mandy Damari said her daughter’s “nightmare in Gaza was over” and thanked “everyone who never stopped fighting for Emily”.

For others, it brought another prolonging of uncertainty. Thirty-three hostages will be released in the first phase but their condition is not known and some are reported to have been killed. Among the remaining hostages, only two children are left – brothers Kfir and Ariel Bibas, aged two and four.

The boys were kidnapped by Hamas on 7 October 2023 alongside their parents Sheri and Yarden. Hamas announced in December 2023 that Sheri and the boys had been killed, but Israeli authorities have never confirmed the deaths.

“It scares me to hope,” Yarden’s cousin Eylon Keshet said, on Saturday night, on what would be Kfir’s second birthday.

“I’m not letting myself truly imagine it, because when I start to imagine it I feel like my stomach turning,” he said. Seeing Shiri and the boys alive would, he said, be “a miracle”.

Daniel Lifschitz, whose grandfather Oded is the second-oldest hostage, at 84, said on Sunday it was “wonderful to see the beginning of the ceasefire”.

“We are getting closer to the day when we might see my grandfather,” he said. “But at the same time, today has been very very hard, because we don’t know whether he is dead or alive. We don’t know whether to prepare for a funeral or a festival.”

In exchange for the three hostages released on Sunday, Israel’s prison service was preparing to release 90 Palestinians from Ofer detention centre in the occupied West Bank. It is also expected that they will be handed over to the Red Cross and taken to a designated area to be properly released.

Relatives of those on the list said they had not been given any details of the process, and were unsure where to go to meet the freed prisoners.

For families in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, there is still great concern that the fragile ceasefire could collapse over the next six weeks. The delays on Sunday morning were quickly overcome, but a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel “retains the right to continue our war aims” in Gaza if the conditions of the deal are broken again.

In Israel on Sunday, several far-right ministers resigned in protest over the terms of the deal, further weakening Netanyahu’s already fragile hold on government.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, the deal’s most prominent critic, has long objected to the ceasefire, saying it comes ahead of Israel’s main war aim of destroying Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

He declared on Sunday that his far-right Jewish Power party would resign en masse from the government. Though he pledged not to attempt to overthrow the government, the move leaves the embattled prime minister with just a razor-thin majority in parliament.

Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said he would not speak against those who had objected to the deal, which he said brought a “heavy price for Israel”.

“Any agreement with a terror organisation is a bad event,” he said. “Releasing terrorists from our jails is a heavy price, with risks.”

Saar acknowledged that there had been a “very serious debate within government” about the terms of the deal. “But we are doing it because of our commitment to our brothers and sisters who are under captivity for more than 15 months already. We will do our utmost to release them.”

The BBC understands that under an agreement with Israel, control of checkpoints in Gaza previously manned by the Israeli military would be handed over to Hamas police, which will manage the flow of displaced people north as Israel withdraws. The arrangement raises questions about how fighters will be prevented from also moving north, and there are fears of chaos as a mass of people moves and attempts to access aid entering the strip.

The ceasefire brought joy to many displaced Gazans, but the humanitarian challenge is huge

Aid lorries began entering Gaza on Thursday 15 minutes after the ceasefire came into effect. But the scale of the need is enormous. Even before the conflict, Gaza was heavily dependent on aid. With farmland and food infrastructure destroyed, Unwra has said 600 lorries should cross into Gaza every day.

Majed al-Ansari, the Qatari foreign ministry spokesman, told the BBC that a dedicated operations centre in Cairo would monitor the ceasefire from abroad, to try and make sure there was a “minimum level of chaos as a result of aid going in”. But he added that for the first phase, Hamas would essentially be in charge of the process in Gaza.

Ansari described the deal as the “last chance for Gaza, and the last chance for the region”.

“This is the deal for hope, this is the deal for the future, this is a deal for all of us collectively,” he said.

US President-elect Donald Trump, whose envoy Steve Witkoff helped broker the deal alongside President Joe Biden’s team, welcomed the ceasefire in a post on his social media site Truth Social. “Hostages starting to come out today! Three wonderful young women will be first,” he wrote.

In Gaza City on Sunday night, Abdallah Shabbir, a young emergency doctor who had worked relentlessly since the day the war began, seeing hundreds of dead and treating thousands of wounded, was allowing himself a small moment of joy.

“It is only because these were my people I was able to keep going,” he said. “I don’t know how to express the feeling I have now, but there is joy. The most important thing is that the bloodshed has stopped. God willing, everything else will follow.”

Man City still without injured trio for WSL derby clash with Man Utd

Gareth Taylor has provided injury updates on three key players ahead of Manchester City’s derby clash against Manchester United this weekend.

City returned to action after the winter break last weekend with a comfortable fourth round FA Cup win at home to Ipswich Town. They are now gearing up for a huge WSL meeting with local rivals United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening.

Just a single point currently separates the two teams in the standings as Taylor’s side sit in third on 22, closely followed by Arsenal and United on 21. Chelsea comfortably lead the way on 28 points.

City were dealt a significant blow to their title hopes before Christmas as they suffered their second league defeat of the season against Everton. The result was a culmination of a significant number of injuries, which saw at least four key players sidelined during that period.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s derby, Taylor confirmed Khadija Shaw is closing in on a return to action, but the likes of Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood are still some way off.

“Alex and Lauren are in a good place,” he told the media in a press conference. “But we know their return is not immediate.

“Bunny is a lot closer, though. It’s pretty imminent but we’re just trying to make sure we tick off a few of the markers that the medical team need to be happy with in order to be ready for this really busy period we’re going into.

“This weekend will be too soon, but outside of that she is moving closer to [being ready for] the next couple of games.”

It’s set to be a busy week for City as Sunday’s derby will be followed by another meeting with United midweek, this time in the League Cup quarter-finals. Next weekend, they face Aston Villa away in the WSL and are at home to Arsenal eight days later.

Troy Aikman doesn’t mince words on Cowboys HC job opening after Mike McCarthy’s exit

Troy Aikman talked about the Cowboys’ head coaching opening on Monday Night Football after the franchise chose to move on from Mike McCarthy and his assessment was brutal. He suggested that it looks like there isn’t a coherent plan from Jerry Jones as they have let the incumbent walk without interviewing with other candidates. The Hall-of-Fame quarterback mentioned some people like Kellen Moore, Ben Johnson, and Aaron Glenn, saying,

“It suggests that there’s not a real plan. The fact that they haven’t had the opportunity to maybe interview a Ben Johnson and some of these others, Aaron Glenn. Kellen Moore being a candidate, that seems logical to me. He’s a guy that has familiarity with the building. He worked obviously with the Cowboys, with Jerry Jones and they know each other very well.”

Troy Aikman was also critical of whether or not the Cowboys vacancy is coveted right now. He acknowledged the high-profile nature of the franchise but said that it might not be the most appealing opening for potential head coaches. He explained it by saying that most candidates would want to do this job on their own terms and that’s hard to do in Dallas, commenting,

“As far as a coveted job, I don’t know that that is accurate. I do think the Cowboys are obviously a high-profile team and whoever is the head coach of that team is certainly going to draw a lot of attention, but I think most football people that take over as a head coach, they want to do it on their terms, and that’s hard to do.”

Troy Aikman further made his point by taking the example of Dan Campbell, who has been so successful as a head coach in Detroit. He said that he might not be able to exact the same results in Dallas, noting,

“If you take Dan Campbell, for instance, is Dan Campbell (in Detroit) Dan Campbell if he’s with the Dallas Cowboys. It’s hard to imagine that he is. It’s hard to imagine that a lot of these coaches might be. I love the Dallas Cowboys. I played there for 12 years. I wish them well. But to say that it is a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that.”

It was a damning indictment of the present-era Cowboys from a man who did as much as anybody else to make the franchise great.

The Sheikh, the Mogul and the Diplomat: The Trio Who Sealed the Gaza Truce

At his seaside office complex in Doha on Wednesday evening, the Qatari prime minister thought he had a deal. Hamas’s negotiators, led by a burly former lawmaker, had left the prime minister’s office, having given up on an 11th-hour demand that was the last major obstacle to a cease-fire in Gaza after 466 days of war.

Reporters had begun to assemble in an auditorium downstairs, expecting to witness the prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, announce that he and other mediators had finally brokered a deal. Two American envoys joined Sheikh Mohammed as he prepared his statement.

Suddenly, there was a new problem, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.

In a room elsewhere on the sixth floor, the Israeli delegation, led by the heads of Israel’s two main intelligence agencies, had their own last-minute demand. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted to clarify the names of a handful of Palestinian prisoners whom Israel would release during the truce.

As his aides tried to resolve the final hitch, Sheikh Mohammed sat in his office with Brett McGurk, President Biden’s lead negotiator, and Steve Witkoff, the representative of President-elect Donald J. Trump, hoping that their efforts had not been wasted.

This account of the final days of negotiation is based on conversations with nine people involved in or briefed on the talks, some of whom spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomacy.

The truce that was ultimately announced at the belated news briefing, hours after Israel’s new demand, was little different to versions promoted for most of the past year by mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the Biden administration, whose representatives met frequently with the warring parties in Cairo, Doha and several European capitals throughout 2024.

What pushed the deal over the line this past week was the unlikely partnership between the envoys of America’s current and future presidents, working in tandem with the Qatari prime minister in marathon late-night meetings. While Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump have competed for credit, the reality is that their representatives were both crucial to the final push, each using different approaches to push the Israeli leadership toward a deal while Sheikh Mohammed focused on Hamas.

Starting last Sunday, the Israeli and Palestinian delegations, as well as the two Americans, spent long days at the prime minister’s compound, close to the old market in downtown Doha. The delegations, which do not speak directly to each other, sat in different rooms on different floors, with Qatari and Egyptian officials passing messages between the two sides.

“They aren’t natural partners, but the combination of these three individuals, and the three worlds they represent, was the only thing that was going to get this done,” said Thomas R. Nides, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel. “You needed pressure from all sides — pressure from the Arab world, pressure from Biden, and pressure from Trump.”

It was Mr. McGurk, a veteran diplomat long focused on the Middle East, who has helped oversee U.S. mediation efforts since the opening weeks of the war and who helped craft the deal’s complicated details nearly a year ago. It was Mr. Witkoff, a real estate investor who plays golf with Mr. Trump, who was instrumental in persuading Israel to finally agree to the deal’s contents. And it was Sheikh Mohammed who persuaded Hamas to make key compromises, while providing both sides with the office space in which to wrangle the final details.

The deal they sealed provides for a pause of at least six weeks in the fighting, during which time Hamas has agreed to gradually release 33 of the hostages captured during the group’s raid on Israel at the start of the war on Oct. 7, 2023. In exchange, Israel has committed to gradually releasing roughly 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, some of whom are serving life sentences for murder, and allowing hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans to return to their homes.

The deal is extremely similar to proposals that the two sides nearly agreed to between May and July 2024. Those talks broke down amid disputes about whether to forge a permanent or temporary truce, whether and how to allow displaced Gazans to return home, how and when Israeli troops might withdraw from Gaza, and the number of hostages Hamas might release in the first weeks of a truce.

As a result, the war dragged on, leading to the killing of tens of thousands more Palestinians, as well as several Israeli hostages.

Critics accused Mr. Netanyahu of sabotaging the talks to avoid a collapse of his governing coalition, which included lawmakers opposed to a deal. Others said that Hamas had intentionally prolonged the negotiations in the hope that Israel might become entrenched in a wider regional conflict with Hamas’s allies in Lebanon, Iran and Yemen. At times, Qatar refused to continue mediating, accusing both sides of halfhearted engagement.

Momentum returned after Mr. Trump’s re-election in November, even before the president-elect warned Hamas that there would be “all hell to pay” if the hostages were not released by his inauguration. He appointed Mr. Witkoff, who had no diplomatic experience but growing business relationships in Qatar, as his emissary in the Middle East. Mr. Witkoff had been playing golf with Mr. Trump in September during what law enforcement officials said was an attempt on the former and future president’s life.

Quietly, members of the Biden administration reached out to Mr. Witkoff to see if they could work together on the cease-fire talks, according to two people familiar with the conversations. Despite vast political chasms between their bosses, Mr. McGurk and Mr. Witkoff began to coordinate, sometimes talking several times a day, according to one of the people.

Still, wide gaps between Hamas and Israel remained. Shortly before Christmas, with just weeks left in the Biden presidency, Mr. McGurk returned despondently from a trip to Doha. He told the Qataris that he would not fly back unless Hamas made a clear signal of its interest in a deal, according to two people familiar with his thinking.

That moment came in the first days of January, according to two people involved in the process. Sheikh Mohammed persuaded Hamas to confirm the names of more than 30 hostages who would be released during the first six weeks of a truce, a long-awaited move that suggested the group was genuinely interested in a deal, the people said. The reason for Hamas’s shift remains unclear, but analysts say that Israel’s increasing dominance over Hamas’s main allies, Hezbollah and Iran, left the group feeling isolated, while its own losses on the battlefield in Gaza left it feeling weakened.

Mr. McGurk was informed of the breakthrough while attending his daughter’s birthday party at an indoor trampoline park on Jan. 4, according to two people familiar with the event. He left the party halfway through, immediately flying to Doha to meet Sheikh Mohammed, his Egyptian counterparts and Israeli negotiators. Mr. Witkoff joined him on Jan. 10, and the pair agreed with Sheikh Mohammed that the Americans would jointly focus on cajoling Israel while the prime minister would press Hamas.

The main remaining differences centered on the depth of a buffer zone that Israel sought to maintain within Gaza’s borders, as well as the number of prisoners to be exchanged for wounded and sick hostages.

It was a visit at short notice by Mr. Witkoff to Jerusalem last Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, that brought a new breakthrough, according to four officials briefed on the meeting.

Mr. Witkoff sat with Mr. Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials in the prime minister’s Jerusalem office, with Mr. McGurk joining the discussion by telephone.

The two Americans pressed Mr. Netanyahu to soften on the last two big obstacles, according to a person familiar with the discussion. Mr. McGurk warned the Israeli leader that he risked losing his best chance of sealing a deal. Then Mr. Witkoff applied the necessary pressure, stressing to Mr. Netanyahu that Mr. Trump wanted this deal done, the person said.

After the meeting, Mr. Netanyahu seemed to have changed his attitude, four officials said. He immediately ordered his four top negotiators — including David Barnea, the head of Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, and Ronen Bar, Israel’s domestic spy chief — to Doha.

Over the next four days, Sheikh Mohammed hosted a marathon series of meetings, mostly in his personal office, as Hamas officials, Israeli negotiators, Egyptian intelligence officers and the two Americans spoke with him, sometimes until the small hours of the morning.

The Israeli and Hamas teams, based on different floors, never saw each other; they took turns entering the prime minister’s office for updates on their enemy’s latest position.

Progress was sometimes hindered by the nature of Hamas’s command structure, which required its leaders in Qatar to check certain details with their counterparts in Gaza, who are all in hiding and hard to reach.

Mr. McGurk and Mr. Witkoff also often checked in with their respective bosses; at times, Mr. McGurk was speaking with Mr. Biden while Mr. Witkoff, just yards away, was on the phone with Mr. Trump or his team, according to a person familiar with the scene.

“We were negotiating word by word, sentence by sentence and formula by formula,” said Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, a minister of state in the Qatari foreign ministry. “It becomes exhausting mentally and physically.”

The biggest breakthrough came close to midnight on Sunday night, according to three people familiar with the moment.

Sheikh Mohammed told the two Americans that the deal could be closed if Israel could make two more compromises, according to one of the people.

Mr. McGurk and Mr. Witkoff walked together down the corridor to the Israelis’ room, where the negotiators were already speaking by phone with Mr. Netanyahu. Joining the call, the Americans told the Israeli leader that a deal could be reached if he agreed to slightly increase the number of prisoners involved in the swap, as well as slightly decrease the depth of the buffer zone.

After a loud debate in Hebrew between Mr. Netanyahu and his team, they made the compromise.

The Americans returned to update Sheikh Mohammed.

“We will have a deal,” the Qatari leader told the envoys, according to the person familiar with the scene.

After a year of failure, around midnight on Sunday, they thought they had an agreement, subject to wrangling over small final details.

Still, Wednesday brought more hitches. With the news briefing scheduled for the evening, Hamas suddenly tried to reopen a discussion about how much land Israeli troops would continue to control along the border between Egypt and Gaza.

Then, after Egyptian and Qatari leaders had persuaded Hamas to back down, Israel pushed for greater clarity about which Palestinian prisoners would be released.

Thousands of miles away, in the Oval Office, Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, sat with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, awaiting news from Mr. McGurk.

Even as Sheikh Mohammed finally announced the deal on Wednesday night, the last prisoners’ identities were still being clarified by the two sides, according to a person familiar with the debate.

But Mr. McGurk and Mr. Witkoff felt confident enough to inform their bosses that a cease-fire would be reached, one person familiar with the scene said.

That final wrangling continued into Thursday, with Mr. McGurk and Mr. Witkoff finally leaving Qatar that night.

The deal was cemented — and so was one of the unlikeliest pairings in diplomatic history.

Israel vote on Gaza ceasefire deal delayed

Strikes continued in Gaza overnight on Wednesday after the ceasefire deal was announced

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has delayed a cabinet vote to approve the Gaza ceasefire deal, due on Thursday, accusing Hamas of seeking last-minute changes to the agreement.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said a “loose end” was being tied up and that he was confident the ceasefire would still begin on Sunday as planned.

Although Israeli negotiators agreed to the deal after months of talks, it cannot be implemented until it is approved by the security cabinet and government.

Hamas said it was committed to the deal, but the BBC understands it was trying to add some of its members to the list of Palestinian prisoners that would be released under the deal.

The delay came after Israeli strikes in Gaza following Wednesday’s announcement of a deal killed more than 80 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

A few hours before the Thursday morning meeting was due, Netanyahu accused Hamas of trying to “extort last minute concessions”.

The cabinet would not convene until Hamas accepted “all elements of the agreement,” a statement from his office read.

Blinken said such a delay was to be expected in such a “challenging” situation.

“It’s not exactly surprising that in a process and negotiation that has been this challenging and this fraught, you may get a loose end,” he told a press conference in Washington.

“We’re tying up that loose end as we speak.”

He said the US was “confident” the deal would come into force on Sunday as planned, and that the ceasefire would then persist.

Israeli media reported that the cabinet was expected to meet on Friday to approve the deal and that the alleged issue had been resolved, although this was not officially confirmed.

A majority of Israeli ministers are expected to back the deal, but late on Thursday Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said his right-wing party would quit Netanyahu’s government if it was approved.

“The deal that is taking shape is a reckless deal,” Ben-Gvir told a news conference, adding it would “erase the achievements of the war”.

However, he said his Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party would not seek to topple the government should the deal be ratified.

He urged the leader of the other far-right party in government, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich of the Religious Zionist party, to join him in resigning.

Meanwhile, a senior Hamas official told the BBC that the group was committed to the agreement announced by the mediators.

The head of Hamas’s delegation, Khalil al-Hayya, officially informed Qatar and Egypt of its approval of all the terms of the agreement, the official told the BBC.

But BBC Gaza correspondent Rushdi Abualouf understands that Hamas was attempting to add the names of one or two symbolic members to the list of prisoners that would be released under the deal.

The first six-week phase of the deal would see 33 hostages – including women, children and elderly people – exchanged for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Israeli troops would also withdraw to the east, away from densely populated areas of Gaza.

Displaced Palestinians would be able to start returning to their homes and hundreds of aid lorries would be allowed entry to the territory each day.

Negotiations for the second phase – which should see the remaining hostages released, a full Israeli troop withdrawal and a return to “sustainable calm” – would start on the 16th day.

The third and final stage would involve the return of any remaining hostages’ bodies and the reconstruction of Gaza – something which could take years.

Israeli air strikes continued after the deal was announced on Wednesday. At least 12 people were killed in Gaza City, where a doctor told the BBC staff “did not rest for one minute” during the “bloody night”.

Strikes were carried out on 50 targets in Gaza since the deal’s announcement, the Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli Security Agency said in a statement.

The prime minister of Qatar – which mediated negotiations – called for “calm” on both sides before the start of the first six-week phase of the ceasefire deal.

Israel launched a campaign to destroy Hamas – which is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US and others – in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

More than 46,788 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million population has also been displaced, there is widespread destruction and there are severe shortages of food, fuel, medicine and shelter, while aid agencies struggle to get help to those in need.

Israel says 94 of the hostages are still being held by Hamas, 34 of whom are presumed dead. There are four Israelis who were abducted before the war, two of whom are dead.

Senate Dems spent Pam Bondi’s hearing talking about one guy. (No, not Trump.)

If you closed your eyes, you might’ve thought Kash Patel was in the witness chair.

Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats spent Wednesday pummeling President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to become FBI director at a confirmation hearing for his prospective boss: attorney general nominee Pam Bondi.

Ranking member Dick Durbin of Illinois raised Patel’s commentary about QAnon conspiracy theories. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota worried about Patel’s comments about targeting the media. Several Democratic senators expressed concern about his purported “enemies list” of people he believes should be investigated or prosecuted.

It all amounted to signs that Democrats view Patel — a polarizing MAGA loyalist who served in Trump’s first administration— as an easier target than Bondi, who seems to be on a glide path to confirmation.

Democrats have widely conceded they will save their energy fighting other of Trump’s more controversial nominees than they will Bondi, who they appear to consider qualified as a former Florida attorney general. Some Democrats even thanked the nominee for productive conversations about bipartisan issues, such as combating fentanyl addiction and human trafficking.

“If they’re asking about Kash Patel, it must be going pretty well,” quipped Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

The fixation on Patel by Democrats became clear early in Bondi’s confirmation hearing and remained consistent throughout her nearly 6 hours in front of the Judiciary Committee.

“My concern, on the basis of statements that President-elect Trump has made, is that he does identify people as political enemies … and there may come a day where there is pressure on you,” said Vermont Sen. Peter Welch. “I’m just going to express my hope that … when it comes to the constitution or pressure from a higher official, you’re going to choose the constitution.”

Bondi gave a full-throated endorsement of Patel, arguing he was the “right person” for the job and well-qualified. She also declined to defend or criticize his past statements, saying she was unfamiliar with them and would let him speak to them at his own confirmation hearing.

“I don’t believe he has an enemies list. He made a quote on TV that I have not heard,” Bondi said, deftly avoiding discussion of a book Patel wrote containing a long list of “Government Gangsters.”

At times, Bondi sought to remind the committee, gingerly, that she would be Patel’s superior. “Mr. Patel would fall under me and the Department of Justice and I will ensure that all laws are followed — and so will he.”

When Durbin raised Patel’s agreement with aspects of QAnon’s agenda, Bondi seemed to express relief that he would soon be in the hot seat instead of her.

“I look forward to hearing his testimony about QAnon in front of this committee,” Bondi said.

Bondi, a friend and ally of Trump for years, served as Trump’s lawyer during his first impeachment trial and assisted Rudy Guiliani in efforts to block Joe Biden’s Pennsylvania win in the 2020 election. Democratic Senators pressed Bondi on whether she believed Biden won that election, a question she repeatedly sidestepped. Bondi also declined to answer whether she would prosecute Jack Smith, the special prosecutor overseeing investigations into Trump, though she repeatedly emphasized she would be guided by facts, not politics.

In her remarks, Bondi vowed the Department of Justice would not pursue political investigations, despite Trump’s repeated calls for some of his staunchest adversaries to face prosecution.

“The partisanship, the weaponization will be gone,” Bondi said. “America must have one tier of justice for all.”

At the same time, Bondi tangled with some of Trump’s harshest critics on the committee. Her combativeness sometimes crossed lines that pending nominees rarely cross, such as when she mentioned California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff’s censure by the House for his handling of Trump-related investigations.

Schiff, a longtime representative, was elected to the Senate last year and is now serving on the Judiciary Committee.

When Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse went over his allotted time, Bondi joked that she’d like that time taken away from one of her toughest interlocutors. “Can we take a minute off Sen. Schiff?” she asked, puzzling Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley, the Senate Judiciary Chair, who didn’t immediately pick up on the joke.

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said Bondi seemed to be trying to avoid saying anything that would provoke Trump, which sometimes complicated her ability to answer simple questions.

“She very artfully dodged questions about whether Pres. Trump lost the 2020 election, which clearly is designed for an audience of one–that’s Donald Trump,” Blumenthal told reporters toward the end of Wednesday’s hearing. “He knows she’s here. She knows he’s watching. And I think that audience is clearly a presence in the room.”

Man City handed huge injury boost ahead of decisive week

Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias has been spotted back in training after a spell on the sidelines through injury, with his potential return coming ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

Dias has been nursing a muscular issue for the past month, last appearing in the club’s late defeat to city rivals Manchester United in mid-December. City enjoyed a mini-revival after Christmas, stringing together three consecutive victories with performances that weren’t all entirely convincing, before falling to a calamitous 2-2 draw with Brentford on Tuesday night.

City led 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium with less than ten minutes remaining but still conspired to emerge without all three points. The defending champions have already shipped 29 league goals – as many as Arsenal conceded across the entirety of last season.

At the time of Dias’ absence, Pep Guardiola predicted that he would be without his centre-back for “three or four weeks”. That rough recovery period has elapsed and the imposing defender participated in first-team training on Wednesday with the players who didn’t start the draw with Brentford.

Dias’ arrival cannot come soon enough for City. The Sky Blues travel to newly promoted Ipswich Town on Sunday before venturing to the French capital for a crucial Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain. Both modern European giants are flirting with the distinct possibility on failing to qualify for the competition’s knockout stages.

After that continental clash, City return to domestic duties with a visit from high-flying Chelsea on Saturday, 25 January.

Guardiola has always maintained that the simple solution to City’s fragility would always be a return to fitness for his fleet of injured players. Dias has been sharing the treatment room with fellow first-choice centre-back John Stones and the reigning Ballon d’Or holder Rodri.

Aside from relying solely upon the club’s medical department, City have turned to the transfer market in a bid to strengthen their backline.

Abdukodir Khusanov is poised to arrive from Lens and a deal has also been agreed for Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis. The young centre-backs have a combined age of 39 and will likely command a sum in the region of £70m between them.
