Newcastle vs Everton: Preview, predictions and lineups

A midweek slate of Premier League action kicks off at St James’ Park as Newcastle host Everton on Tuesday night.

The Magpies continue to be struck down by injuries but head into their upcoming duel in high spirits having staged a dramatic turnaround to beat West Ham 4-3 on Saturday. Hero Harvey Barnes, who’s endured a tough debut campaign at the club, will be given a chance to shine from the outset against the Toffees.

Newcastle’s victory was a major pressure reliever on Eddie Howe, who would have come under fierce criticism had West Ham held on for all three points. Saturday’s win leaves the Magpies on the cusp of the European spots.

Everton are in desperate need of respite after losing again at the weekend as Seamus Coleman’s own goal consigned them to a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth. The Toffees haven’t won a Premier League game since Christmas, with their position towards the bottom of the table a precarious one. They’ve got to start picking up points soon with the pressure mounting on Sean Dyche.

Here’s 90min’s preview of Tuesday night’s duel on Tyneside.

Newcastle’s injury crisis worsened at the weekend as Jamaal Lascelles succumbed to an ACL tear just a week after Sven Botman suffered the same long-term setback.

The two centre-backs join Nick Pope, Lewis Miley, Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Callum Wilson on the sidelines.

Anthony Gordon is suspended and won’t be able to face his former club after he received a second yellow card late on against West Ham. Miguel Almiron is also a doubt having picked up a knock on Saturday.

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Everton (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Longstaff, Anderson; Murphy, Isak, Barnes.

The visitors are nowhere near as hamstrung by injury and Dyche could welcome Vitalii Mykolenko back into his matchday squad on Tuesday after he missed Saturday’s defeat at Bournemouth through illness.

Dele Alli remains sidelined with a hip injury, but the former Tottenham star could feature before the end of the season.

Arnaut Danjuma is currently recovering from an ankle injury.

Everton predicted lineup vs Newcastle (4-4-1-1): Pickford; Patterson, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Young, Onana, Garner, McNeil; Gomes; Beto.

Newcastle may be defensively porous and without star winger Gordon on Tuesday, but they’ll be riding a wave of momentum and are typically so hard to stop under the lights at St James’ Park. The Magpies have won ten of their 15 Premier League home games this season.

Everton are competent on their travels and thumped Howe’s injury-hit side back in December, but there’s little to suggest they’re capable of springing a surprise on Tuesday night. They don’t have the attacking talent to make use of Newcastle’s distinct vulnerabilities and their lack of defensive solidity in 2024 will undoubtedly concern Dyche.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Everton
