Premier League fixtures today – your guide to Saturday’s games

The vast array of European football on our TV screens midweek has left us a little short of Premier League matches this Saturday, but there are still plenty of tantalising clashes on offer in England’s top flight.

Last season’s runners-up Arsenal are in action fresh from their Champions League victory over Sevilla, while Newcastle United are looking to bounce back from their first European defeat of the season at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

In-form Chelsea kick the day off as they aim to make it five games unbeaten, while there’s also a relegation six-pointer at the foot of the table.

Here’s your guide to Saturday’s Premier League action.

After a stumbling start to the new Premier League season, Chelsea are starting to find their feet under Mauricio Pochettino. They were undoubtedly the better side against Arsenal last time out, making their late surrender of a two-goal lead all the more frustrating.

However, rewind two months and the Blues were in dire straits, winning just one of their opening six league matches and falling to defeats to Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Aston Villa. Now things look a lot brighter in west London, with Chelsea finally finding their goalscoring touch.

Brentford made a similarly concerning start to the season but put a run of six games without a win to an end when they breezed past Burnley last weekend. The 3-0 victory was as simple as they come and will give Thomas Frank’s some much-needed confidence heading to Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Having somehow squeezed a point out of a pretty woeful performance at Stamford Bridge last weekend, Arsenal should have a more comfortable ride this Saturday. They welcome bottom-placed Sheffield United to the Emirates as they look to keep pace with north London rivals Tottenham at the top of the table.

Gabriel Jesus could be absent for the Gunners, but in the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard they should have sufficient firepower to blow the Blades away.

It looks unlikely that Paul Heckingbottom’s side will pick up a first Premier League win of the season in London, but Sheffield United have caused issues for the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham already this season. However, they’ll be keen to avoid a repeat of their eight-goal mauling against Newcastle several weeks ago.

It may only be the end of October, but this could well be an early relegation six-pointer.

Bournemouth, much like Sheffield United, are still searching for a first Premier League win under new coach Andoni Iraola. The former Rayo Vallecano boss had impressed in Spain, but has found the Premier League a much tougher proposition. After four successive league defeats, Saturday provides the perfect opportunity for the Cherries to kickstart their campaign.

Burnley have also had plenty to grimace about this season, sitting just a point above Saturday’s opponents. The Clarets have conceded three or more in over half their Premier League matches this season and look a shadow of the confident, free-flowing side Vincent Kompany forged in the Championship.

Having secured a late win in the Gary O’Neil derby against Bournemouth last weekend, Wolves welcome Newcastle to Molineux this Saturday. The Old Gold have started to hit their stride after a slow start to the season, going unbeaten in their last four games including a win over champions Manchester City.

The likes of Pedro Neto, Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha are starting to form a formidable triumvirate up top, with forgotten striker Sasa Kaljdzic popping up with some key goals having returned from a long spell on the sidelines.

Newcastle won’t be looking forward to a trip to Molineux, especially given the Magpies fell to a first European defeat of the season against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening. A fruitless but spirited performance saw them come away with nothing in the Champions League, but they remain unbeaten in six domestic games.
