Real Madrid respond to rumours of Florentino Perez’s resignation

Real Madrid have laughed off suggestions president Florentino Perez is set to resign from his position at the club.

Rumours in the Spanish press, which were picked up on social media, suggested Perez was set to resign from Madrid after changing the name of the club’s training facilities to ‘Real Madrid City’.

The stories reached Madrid, who released a statement on Saturday insisting both claims were far from the truth.

A statement read: “Faced with a rumour that appeared on some social networks stating that president Florentino Perez was supposedly considering leaving the presidency of the club, Real Madrid CF wants to state:

“These rumours are totally false and come from factors that are nothing to do with reality.

“And that in the next General Assembly of Representative Partners of Real Madrid there will be no item on the agenda in which the name of Real Madrid City is discussed.”

Perez first took over as president in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004, only to resign from his role two years later amid questions over his business-first approach.

However, he would return to the club unopposed in the summer of 2009 and has remained in his position ever since.

Under his presidency, Madrid have lifted six La Liga titles and six Champions Leagues, with Perez’s heavy spending helping the La Liga side remain among Europe’s elite.
